Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- A cargo train collided with a passenger train in Pakistan's commercial capital of Karachi on Tuesday, killing 12 people and wounding 19 others, police said.
The police chief of Karachi ruled out the possibility of sabotage, saying the crash was caused by a technical error.
But the death toll was likely to rise, said Waseem Ahmed of the Karachi Police, because rescue efforts were still underway and emergency workers were still struggling to pull passengers from one train car.
Pakistani television showed crowds of people swarming battered train cars, trying to help survivors out of the wreckage as rescue workers carted away wounded women and children on stretchers.
