From: CNN Subject: Whitman Spending Millions In Re-election Bid New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, a Republican seeking re-election, launched a television advertising campaign Tuesday touting her record to voters in the Nov. 4 election. Campaign aides said they have raised the maximum amount allowed by state law, $2.3 million. That makes Whitman eligible for double what she has raised -- $4.6 million -- when the state certifies the campaign's request. Whitman on Monday submitted documentation with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission for an incremental matching fund request of $216,313. To date, Whitman has received a total of $3.1 million in state matching funds while Whitman's challenger, Democrat Jim McGreevey, a state senator who also is the mayor of Woodbridge, has received $1.2 million, a state election official said. Each candidate is limited to spending a total of $6.9 million for the general election: $2.3 million that they raise and $4.6 million they receive in state matching funds. The 30-second TV ad that began airing Tuesday focuses on the incumbent's record. "Gov. Christie Whitman has put New Jersey back on the right road," the ad says. "Check the record: 14 tax cuts to boost our economy. Unemployment the lowest in 7 years. Violent crime down 11 percent..." Whitman's ad will run "statewide," including in the expensive New York and Philadelphia media markets, according to the campaign. The McGreevey campaign told CNN that they have "no set schedule" for their television ads. In Other News:Tuesday Sept. 16, 1997
