CNN SHOWDOWN: IRAQ

War Update

Aired March 26, 2003 - 12:30   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: (AUDIO GAP) Leon Harris at the CNN Center in Atlanta with another update with the "War In Iraq."
The nation's commander in chief rallied the troops in person today. President Bush told the forces at MacDill Air Force in Florida that a day of reckoning is coming for Iraq but said the war is far from over.

CNN's Martin Savidge reports the delivery of crucial fuel has made it to the U.S. forces on the front lines. U.S. Marines protecting the convoy faced two tough days of sniper fire and artillery shelling and vicious sandstorms. And the 250,000 million gallons of diesel fuel means frontline forces can now continue to advance toward Baghdad.

More reports coming that Baghdad is booby-trapped. Cent Com says U.S. intelligence reports of bridges leading into the Iraqi capital may be set with explosives. Brigidier General Vincent Brooks told reporters, "This regime will go to extraordinary lengths to protect itself.

U.S. Central Command defended the use of it high-tech weapons in the war in Iraq. The deputy director showed reporters a video of one such weapon taking out a vehicle under a bridge in western Iraq. See the video there. The bridge wasn't touched. The vehicle is gone.

Well, the weapons demonstration follows international criticism over an apparent bombing of a Baghdad market. Iraqis say 15 civilians were killed in the incident. Cent Com says it can't confirm that coalition forces are responsible for it. He suggests that Iraqis themselves may be behind the explosion.

A coalition air strike over Baghdad has apparently failed to take out Iraqi TV. The broadcasts were interrupted after a predawn air attack, but then they resumed later on. Pentagon said the television station was on its list of targets.
