KELLI ARENA, CNN ANCHOR: Far out in the Atlantic, Bermuda today is assessing the damage from Hurricane Fabian, which raked the island for six hours with high winds and rain. CNN's Gary Tuchman rode out the storm and filed this report. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) GARY TUCHMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: It is now official. According to the National Hurricane Center, this is now the most powerful hurricane to hit Bermuda in almost eight decades. 125 mile per hour gusts, 115 mile per hour sustained winds. The Atlantic Ocean behind me here in the Southhampton Parish area of Bermuda, the southwestern part of Bermuda, this is where Hurricane (unintelligible.) And you can see right now, the roiling angry waters. There was a restaurant in a deck down here, now gone. Now you're going to see the wood planks in the water disappear, totally destroyed when the winds reached hurricane level. Take a look at some of the palm trees in the horizon back here. When we got here, there were far more palm trees than there are now. You can see them blowing around these hurricane force winds. Many of them have gone down since this all began. Bermuda often gets scared by hurricanes. After all, it's in the ocean. It's only a 20 square mile British territory. But because it's so small, it's usually just a scare. The hurricanes usually go to the west or the east. This is only the fourth time since 1926 that there has been a direct hit. It's very hard to ascertain how much damage there is. That's what police are doing as we speak, but the airport was closed this morning, and it will stay closed indefinitely as police try to figure out how much damage there is here in Bermuda.
