Moderate earthquake shakes Palm Springs

earthquake

PALM SPRINGS, California (CNN) -- A desert area near Palm Springs was shaken by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake early this morning.

The temblor was centered about five miles southeast of Yucca Valley and 19 miles north-northeast of Palm Springs.

There are no reports of damage or injury at this time.

Cal Tech seismologist Joe Franck says the quake struck at 12:54 am, and was followed by a series of smaller tremors. He says a 3.1 aftershock struck at 12:56 am, and was followed by a 3.5 aftershock at 1:18.

Franck says the temblor was an aftershock to the 1992 Lander quake. There have been over 70,000 aftershocks to that earthquake, and this is the 24th to have a magnitude greater than 5, according to Franck.

The magnitude 7.3 Landers earthquake struck June 28, 1992, and was followed a few hours later by a magnitude 6.5 quake in the San Bernardino Mountains. One person was killed.

Joshua Tree sheriff's station clerk Gail Richardson says "It was felt throughout the entire basin, it was a pretty good one."
